The
NHRC Property Committee is
a group of volunteers whose duties broadly include maintenance, repair
and upgrades of the buildings, equipment and grounds of the church. We
do as much work ourselves as possible, using the talents and skills of
committee members and others in the church. This includes such things as
heating, electrical, and plumbing systems, painting, building repairs,
lawn mowing, snow clearing, and many other projects that arise in the
church, Ed Center and parsonage.
The Annual Spring grounds clean-up is held in April. We
welcome any and all who are willing to assist. Some of us will start at
8:30, but we encourage you to come at whatever time you can. The
following are some of the jobs to be done. There may be other
suggestions as well. Raking/blowing leaves. Removal of fallen tree
branches from lawns. Put away shovels & salt buckets that are at various
doorways. Clean up litter along road frontage. Sweep up sand/dirt along
edges of driveways & parking lots. Pull out & store the stakes that mark
curbs for snow plow. Move snow blowers to rear of barn & lawn mowers to
front. Wash windows in various parts of the buildings. Please contact
any member of the Property Committee if you have any questions.
Grounds: During
warmer months, one of our key jobs is mowing the lawns, which we do
in-house with volunteer members of the church. This saves the church a
considerable expense compared to paying commercial contractors. In
addition, we take care of periodic trimming of trees and shrubs around
our buildings. During colder months, our volunteers take care of
clearing snow and ice from all walkways and steps. Plowing of driveways
and parking lots is done by a contracted service. On a Saturday in
spring and fall, we run a grounds clean-up day, using volunteers to
clear leaves and fallen branches, clean gutters, and generally get the
property ready for the coming season. We often tackle projects as varied
as pouring concrete sidewalks, patching holes in blacktop, painting
lines in parking lots, installing signs, finding and repairing leaks,
and installing a new wood and concrete floor in the barn.
Buildings: The
complex of NHRC buildings is significant, when you consider the
sanctuary, fellowship hall, Ed Center, parsonage and even a barn. Our
committee and other church volunteers take care of as much interior and
exterior maintenance and upgrades as we can. We only hire contractors
for major structural projects such as roofing, or the recent repairs to
the bell tower and parsonage. Even the majority of maintenance of our
heating, electrical, and water systems is done in-house. Painting is
another major area where we make use of church volunteers. Virtually any
painted or stained surface you see has been done for only the price of
materials. These are just a few of the Property committee's
responsibilities. We welcome anyone to join with us at our meetings at
7:00 p.m. on the 3rd Monday of each month. A list of current
members is shown below. Please don't get the impression that this is
mostly a retirees' club. We need and welcome people in all age brackets
to insure that the "institutional memory" of our facilities functioning
is continuously passing to younger members.
