Caring for Creation Ministry
Project FeederWatch wants YOU! Consider
becoming part of a growing team of citizen scientists making important
contributions to bird research. Project FeederWatch began in 1987
as a winter-long survey of birds that visit backyard feeders in North
America. Since then, the project has grown to become the most
comprehensive database on feeder bird populations in the world.
The goals of the project are: to track
changes in the distribution and abundance of feeder birds, to assist in
monitoring diseases that affect birds, to track range expansions of
introduced species, to identify habitat features, types of feeders, and
types of food influence how often birds use feeders, and to share
information about feeder birds with project participants and the public.
To participate, you need only one
or more feeders and a commitment to count and record your findings on
two consecutive days every two weeks from November to March. Your
counts can be submitted online or on paper data forms. Complete
directions are provided when you join the project. The fee is $15
per year. I've found that the enjoyment and knowledge gained have
made it well worth the investment. It's a great idea for families
as well as individuals.
