From the Pastor's Study....

Dear members and friends,

I want to first highlight some special 250th activities we have enjoyed this summer.  In July, we had a wonderful evening of entertainment by
the King's Brass.  Our sanctuary was filled on a hot Friday evening as we tapped our feet, clapped our hands, and sang patriotic songs with
10 wonderful musicians.  We even had some of our own members participate with the band as they played hymns.

In August, we had a great church family picnic at Bowdoin Park.  Our friends from Bethel Missionary Baptist Church also were invited.  The
weather was great, the fellowship was fun, and the food was spectacular!  My thanks to all who made these two special events happen.

Our September 250th event will be a 24-hour prayer vigil scheduled for September 11.  And then, in October, we are planning two events-
The ribbon cutting of our new "Circle of Life Garden" with a stone labyrinth, and our special worship
service scheduled for Sunday
afternoon, October 19th, 2008 at 3:00 p.m. in the sanctuary.  This will be a great service celebrating our Past, Present, and Future.

Below is our September worship schedule.  I look forward to seeing you as we being another great year at NHRC!

In His service,

Rev. Keith Tamlyn

From Your Associate Pastor....

Dear Friends,

Recently I was updating a brochure we put together about two years ago.  It's entitled "Welcome!  New
Hackensack Reformed Church."  There's a section in the brochure called "What You Should Know
about New Hackensack Reformed Church" - and it contains questions like:  When is Worship? - How
Can I Serve the Community? - and my favorite - Do You Have Fun Things to Do?

Having spent more than four years as your Associate Pastor, I would answer that question with a
resounding "YES!!!"  And we have yet another fun event coming up.

We'll be having a church family picnic on September 7 after the 10:00 a.m. service.  The Congregational
Life Council will do its usual spectacular job of grilling hot dogs and hamburgers, and the congregation
will have the opportunity to bring side dishes and desserts.  You'll even have a choice of where to eat
your food.  Nature lovers can enjoy the great outdoors - and lovers of air conditioning (like me) can
enjoy their meal in our cool Fellowship Hall.

Bring your friends to our picnic, and tell them that even though our nickname is "The Frozen Chosen,"
we truly know how to have fun!!

Blessings,
Marie

Parish Health Ministry

Mary Lou Grott, R.N.,  462-0810, Ext 105, Tues., Wed., Thurs.

As our fall programs and busy schedules kick into full gear, here's an update on some of this fall's
coming health ministry events:

"CPR and AED Refresher"  Saturday, October 4th, 9am - 11:00am in Fellowship Hall.

This class is being offered FREE to those who are currently certified in CPR/AED, as a good refresher of last year's
training, with lots of hands-on practice to improve our skills and decrease our fears!  Watch the bulletins in
September for more details.  Please sign up in the Gathering Area, or call Mary Lou, as our instructor from Alamo
will need to know how many to prepare for.

For those interested in a CPR/AED certification class, please call Mary Lout at the Parish Health Office
(462-0810 ext. 105) for more information.

Parenting Classes for Parents and Grandparents of All Ages

To continue our Parenting Series program, the Health Ministry is excited to offer you the fourth part of the
Pro-Active Parenting Series entitled, "Communicating with your Child or Teen."  We are so pleased and
grateful that Mary and Ozzie Mantilla have once again agreed to co-lead this program the following 4
Sundays at 9:15 a.m.:  October 12th and 26th, and November 2nd and 16th, in Rm 14.  Watch your
September bulletins for more details and sign up in the Gathering Area.

OUTREACH

Outreach Celebrates our 250th....In honor of our 250th Birthday Celebration, the Outreach Council has decided to collect 250 sets of sheets for Dutchess County Coalition for the Homeless, to help sustain the sheet supply for their sixty bed homeless shelter in Poughkeepsie.

The sheet sets (consisting of a fitted and flat sheet as well as a pillowcase):
    Must be twin size
    Must be NEW
Solid colors only (no prints, please)
We request a thread count of no less than 280 because they will be washed every night.

The collection began in March and will run throughout the year or until we meet our goal of 250 sets.  They will be distributed to the shelter on a monthly basis throughout the year.  To keep the congregation informed of our progress toward the goal, a paper thermometer will be placed on the Outreach bulletin board located in the hall by the kitchen.  We hope to reach our goal by this summer.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Joan Heller, Outreach Council Chair, at 896-8733.  We thank you in advance for your support!

Towards our sheet set goal

Update on the Homeless Shelter....

For more than a dozen years New Hackensack Reformed Church has been providing a meal on the fourth Sunday of the
month to guests at the overnight shelter, located on the old state hospital grounds at Hillcrest House.  What began as a
commitment to twelve guests has now mushroomed into the daunting task of feeding forty to sixty people each time.  It
has become increasing difficult for the Outreach Council to find people willing to take on the task.

Recently our Wednesday morning Serendipity small group offered to make a meal, as our mission project.  With six
people and their families involved, the cost was affordable.  Ron and I had the privilege of serving the food that evening.
We were both overwhelmed by the needs and the apparent extreme hunger of the guests.  One said that the weekend
had been particularly hard and he had only eaten peanut butter and jelly sandwiches the past two nights.

I truly pray that NHRC does not have to abandon this very deserving outreach project.  Possibly various councils
and committees at NHRC could commit to one month a year to provide and serve a meal.  You can contact the
Outreach Council to schedule a date.  If you have questions or concerns about the logistics, Ron and I would love to
share our experience with you.

In Christ,

Barbara Prete

Circle of Life Garden

Progress, Progress, Progress!!

September is here!  We are making substantial progress on our labyrinth.  You will see that, as we continue to finish
all the stones, other aspects of our labyrinth will appear.  Benches and planters will be made and set, and trees and
plants that are able to be planted at this time of the year will be planted.  If all the stones of the labyrinth are set in
the ground, the labyrinth can be used by those who choose to on September 11th.

If you have a celebration, honor or memory in which you wish to donate, it is never too late!  The Circle of Life
Garden is ongoing.  Want to volunteer?  We can still use your help.  Please feel free to contact any of the
committee members or Hazel in the church office at 462-0810 with any questions you may have.

Thank you to all who have given in their own special ways to make this garden a reality for New Hackensack
Reformed Church.

ADULT EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES....

The School for Christian Living and Serving, a ministry of the Mid-Hudson and Orange Classes, is pleased
to announce the fall 2008 program - An Introduction to the Spiritual Disciplines; Movers and Shakers of
Christian Fiath: Justin Martyr to Thomas Aquinas, Part 1; An Introduction and Survey of the Old
Testament and Incarnate 101 - A workshop on Saturday, November 1st for Youth Leaders, Church
School Teachers and Leaders.

The aim of the School is to fulfill Christ's command to make disciples of all nations.  We endeavor to offer
training for adults that will deepen their faith and equip them to use the gifts God has given them for ministry
within Christ's Church.

The school was established in 1994 and has grown steadily since by offering a consistent slate of courses.
At the same time, the school has remained flexible with a spiritual ear sensitively tuned to clergy, laity, and
the ever-changing needs of the congregations within its bounds.  This has resulted in an ever-broadening
range of Christian education courses offered for the serious student and also for those who are simply
seeking additional knowledge on a particular Christian subject.

The School for Christian Living and Serving is open and available to Christians of all denominations.  There
are no academic prerequisits except for those students on a study track to become preaching elders.

Please take time to prayerfully consider if there is a course that you would like to take this fall.  (See the half
sheet insert in the center of the paper copy of this Church News for registration information and pick up
a copy of full course descriptions and other educational opportunities being offered this fall at the
Information Center in the Gathering Area.)

Betty B. Garee Scholarship Awarded... The Worship and Music Council is pleased to announce that
scholarship awards for the 2008/2009 school year have been awarded in equal shares to Eric Iannucci
and Kristen Muldoon both of whom are now Klokken Ringer alumnae.  Eric will be attending SUNY
Fredonia to study music education and trombone performance.  Kristen will be attending Nazareth
College to study to become a certified music therapist.  The Council congratulates them on their
past accomplishments and is pleased to support them in their future studies.

Greetings from Kermit!

We frogs
usually aren't very observant.  Still, it seems to me that the sun is going down a little earlier,
and there's just a little bit less green around me.  That usually means we'll soon see the leaves begin
to change color, and all you humans will start to get a little bit busier.  Many of you who are young
will be again riding every day in big yellow boxes with wheels.  (Frogs generally do best if they stay
away from things on wheels - and away from young humans, too!!)

This time of year also brings with it the return of the Wednesday Morning Workshops!!  In
September they'll be held on the 3rd, 10th, 17th, and 24th, in room 15 at 9:30 a.m.  Young children
are ALWAYS welcome, of course - after all, the Bazaar is about them!!  Some of the projects
planned for the next few months are stuffing cat pillows, beaded bracelets, washcloth ducks,
paint brush snowmen, flower arrangements, and making soaps.  There are usually several projects
going on at once, and there's just bound to be one that's perfect for YOU!!  Please join in the fun-
you'll be having a good time, and doing something for the young humans at the same time!!  There's
LOTS to do to get ready for this year's Piggy Bank Bazaar on Saturday, December 6th, and we
really need YOUR HELP!!

The Piggy Bank Bazaar is always very glad to share supplies from Piggy's closet, and we're happy to
help groups that work with children.  A Great Big Froggy Thank You goes out to everyone who has
donated craft materials and gift items, since this helps us keep expenses down, and allows us to be
generous with our donations.  So far this year the Bazaar has been able to donate money to the
Klokken Ringers, to the church for mortgage reduction, to help several children going to church
camps, to the RCA Congregational Services Fund honoring our NHRC babies, and to the Circle
of Life Garden.

My good human friend Mrs. Ray (who is having a very, VERY busy few months!!!) reminds me that
completed Take Home Kits can be brought to Room 15 at any time, and placed in the supply
corner or in the large closet.  In November they'll be featured in the Gathering Room Showcase.

There's room in Piggy's Closet for some supplies for the Wednesday Morning Workshop foks to
use over the next few months.  In particular, we could really use silk flowers, floral foam, votive
candles, polyester stuffing, assorted new nails, screws, bolts, washers, etc., pliers, needles, straight
pins, yardsticks, yarn, craft beads, jewelry making supplies, and crafty supplies.  The Plant Table
is always VERY popular at the Bazaar, so we'll need bunches and BUNCHES of plants in
December.  We'll also need many rolls of gift wrapping, ribbon, bows, and Scotch tape, and
large paper bags with handles.

I had best hop back to my pond now, while I can still see to safelty jump down off this keyboard.
But I'll be making my way back to look in on some of the Workshops, and I hope to see YOU there!!

Yours in Love,
Kermit

STEPHEN MINISTRY

Stephen Ministers Care...  When was the last time someone really listened to you?  We're
talking about the undistracted, full attention kind of listening.  That's one of the ways Stephen
Ministers care for others.  Will you consider serving in this way?

A new class will be starting this month.  For more information, please contact Mary Lou Grott,
462-0810, ext. 105; Jackie Carey, 227-5097; Fiath Schwenker, 897-4727; or Keith Tamlyn,

Thank You's and Notes

Dear Friends,

My heartfelt thanks to all who remembered me after my surgery and long stay in the nursing home.
The prayers, cards, flowers and visits meant so very much to me.  I still have a very long road
ahead, but with God's good grace I will be able to use my hand again.  Special thanks to Keith
and Marie for their pastoral support and Mary Lou and Faith who worked so hard to find the
many wonderful volunteers who generously give of their time to take me to therapy.  I feel so
blessed to be a part of this great church.

                                                                          God bless you all,
                                                                           Muriel Orr

Dear Church Family,

Many thanks for the kind words and cards from everyone on the passing of my mother,
Wilma Herbert.

                                                                           Nancy Cooper

Thank you and God bless you....

Pastor Keith, First Lady Betsy, Officers, NHRC Family,

On behalf of our family we would like to thank you for inviting us to share in your 250th church
anniversary and picnic on August 9th.  The scriptures teach us that it is good for brothers and
sisters to dwell together.  Saturday was a wonderfully moving and spiritual experience.  May
God continue to bless each and every one of you now and forevermore.

We love you!

Pastor and First Lady Hunt, Officers and the Bethel Missionary Baptist Church Family

Congratulations and best wishes to Geoff Bass who graduated in the Class of 2008 as
Salutatorian of Roy C. Ketcham High School.  He will be attending the University of
Pennsylvania this fall.

A great big thank you to all the volunteers who helped move furniture out in back in the
Nursery School classrooms after services the last two Sunday mornings.  Your help
is very much appreciated - we couldn't have done it without many hands!
